Atticus is older than the fathers of most of Scout's friends. His hair is black, but it is turning gray due to his age. Scout, the narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, talks about her father's "graying black hair and square-cut features" in Chapter 15. Atticus has a strong jaw line, but Scout observes that it changes a little as he gets older. She also notices that her father's skin is becoming wrinkled:
One became aware of telltale creases forming under his ears, one noticed not his jet-black hair but the gray patches growing at his temples (Chapter 29).
Atticus wears glasses. He wears them because he can hardly see out of his left eye without glasses. He sometimes turns his head to focus his right eye on something he needs to see clearly. When Scout complains about her father being old, she mentions the fact that he wears glasses. Dill claims that his father is taller than Atticus. Scout notes that the sheriff, Mr. Tate, is the same height as Atticus.
