After the animals run Farmer Jones and his men off the farm and take over, they attempt to set up a political system that will right the wrongs they suffered under human rule. At first, everything goes very well. The animals, primarily Old Major, come up with the Seven Commandments of Animalism, paraphrased as follows: all animals are equal, two-legged creatures are enemies, four-legged or winged creatures are friends, animals don't wear clothes, sleep in beds or drink alcohol and no animal will kill another animal. During the first harvest, all the animals pull together and work hard, so that everything is gathered and nothing is wasted. At first, the animals hope for an easier life and a retirement, now that the humans are gone. Later, when Napoleon takes control, all the ideals of the new government are betrayed.
