Once the article about ‘frindle’ appeared in the local paper, Bud Lawrence quickly hired a lawyer and claimed the trademark for the word. That meant only he had the legal right to manufacture anything with the word ‘frindle’ on it or use the word in any way to make money.
He promptly starts producing pens with the word ‘frindle’ printed on them, and all the kids in town buy them. Bud goes on to sell t-shirts, ball caps, and other ‘frindle’ merchandise all over the world.
Since it is public knowledge that Nick made up the word, Bud signs an agreement with Nick’s father to give Nick 30% of all the profits from the frindle sales. Nick doesn’t know anything about this, since his dad secretly deposits the checks into a savings account. He doesn’t want Nick to become spoiled and refuse to learn the value of hard work, so he lets the money build up for a later time.
