"Physics is the study of matter and energy." Please give an explanation of this statement.

Science is the study of the natural and physical universe. That is to say, science does not speak on metaphysical or spiritual things, but only material. And the current theory of the material universe is that everything is either a form of matter or energy. Physics is the study of how the objects and structures of the universe act and interact. As such, the science of physics is, literally, "the study of energy and matter."

Matter is simply anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything from atoms to people to planets.

Energy is the ability to affect matter. This can be something simple like kinetic energy, which is the energy contained in moving matter, or it could be something like heat, which can change the state and shape of matter.

It should, perhaps, be noted that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can be transferred and change form. This stability is what allows physics to work consistently in a constantly changing universe.
