Litmus solution is an aqueous mixture of several naturally occurring dyes which are extracted from lichens. Litmus solution is a pH indicator. A pH indicator is a substance which changes color depending on the pH of the tested substance.
Litmus solution turns red in acidic solutions, purple in neutral solutions, and blue in basic solutions. This indicator can be used as a liquid solution, but is more commonly formulated as 'litmus paper' - thin strips of paper loaded with litmus which are then briefly dipped into the substance being tested. The paper absorbs the test substance, which reacts with the litmus and changes the color of the paper strip.
Methylamine [CH3NH2] is a weak base.
CH3NH2 (aq) + H2O (l) `hArr` CH3NH3+ (aq) + OH- (aq)
In water, methylamine accepts a hydrogen from the water, resulting in the formation of CH3NH3+ and a hydroxide ion. This is a basic solution, so the litmus solution would turn blue.
