What is an introductory sentence for an essay on "The Gift of the Magi"?

In order to develop an introductory sentence for an essay, you need to clarify what your paper will be about.  If you are unsure, consider the story itself.

The story is about a husband and wife, Jim and Della.  They both wish to give each other a special Christmas gift.  Their problem is that they do not have enough money to do so.  Della sells her beautiful long hair to get money for Jim's gift.  Jim sells his treasured family heirloom pocket watch to get money for Della's gift.  Della buys Jim a chain for his watch, only to find out that he has already sold it.  Jim buys a set of beautiful combs for Della's hair, which she has already sold.  They both realize that despite giving gifts they cannot use, they share a special love.  At the end of the story, O. Henry described them as "two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house."

What will the topic of your essay be?  Will it be about whether or not Della and Jim made the right decision in selling their prized possessions?  Will it be about how their actions changed them?

If your essay is about how whether or not they made the right decision, here are a few options:

- In O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," Della and Jim each make an unwise decision.

- In "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, a husband and wife each make a sacrifice to buy a special gift.

- The choice to sacrifice something special or valuable can be unwise if is done without careful consideration.

- Sacrifice can be a way of showing love, which is evident in O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi."

Good luck with your essay!
