At the beginning of Chapter 10, Scout laments about her father's age and occupation. She mentions that Atticus is much older than most of her friend's parents and says that he does nothing that would arouse anyone's admiration. Scout also comments that Jem was crazy about football. She says that Atticus was always willing to play keep-away, but refused to allow his son to tackle him. Jem wishes that he could tackle Atticus, but he tells Jem that he is too old. Jem is awestruck when Atticus displays his expert marksmanship abilities by shooting and killing the rabid dog that was staggering down the main road of Maycomb. Scout mentions that Jem was "paralyzed" and at a loss for words after seeing Atticus' perfect shot. Both Jem and Scout are amazed and proud of their father's marksmanship abilities. Miss Maudie goes on to explain why Atticus never bragged about being the best shot in Maycomb and Jem is still shocked at what he witnessed. Jem and Scout are no longer ashamed of their father after seeing him shoot Tim Johnson.
