"Civil" is an adjective with multiple definitions, so context is important to determine what it means. One meaning of the word is well-mannered and courteous. In a political or sociological context, the word "civil" differentiates a society with a government from the natural state of human interaction. In Marxist literature, the word has an even more specific meaning, referring to a society in the stage of historical development directly after the medieval era. In medieval societies, individuals played roles in a number of different types of societal groupings, such as guilds or estates. When "partial" societies ceased to exist within the larger context of the world, a civil society developed in its place. Civil society, in a Marxist text, refers to a society in which people have a more individualistic relationship with the world around them and are isolated from community because the previous institutions that brought together small groups of individuals had ceased to exist.
