The Dao De Jing (also called Tao Te Ching or Laozi) is the central text of Taoism and an important text in Chinese cultural history. The title translates to "The Classic [text] of the Way's Virtues," and the text itself is composed of 81 short poems or chapters on politics, spirituality, and practical advice for self-conduct. The Dao De Jing is not a chronological story with a plot or conflict which must be resolved; instead, the central theme of the book is how to act in accordance with the Dao or "Way." The central problem of Daoism and the Dao De Jing is acting in a way that is disharmonious with the natural order of the Dao. Daoism emphasizes the importance of compassion, humility, temperance, spontaneity, nature, and detachment from material goods.
