How is living in Paris different in Hemingway's A Moveable Feast, compared to Zola's Belly of Paris? How is it the same?

There are many differences between the two works. In fact, nearly the only significant similarity is the love both writers have for the city of Paris. The content and tone of the respective books are quite different, as is the message.

Class is perhaps the most significant difference between the two works. Hemingway’s memoir features middle class to upper class people, while Zola’s novel depicts working class characters mired in abject poverty. The tone of the Hemingway book is one of happiness, possibly even decadence. Zola’s novel is grim and could be called cynical.

The message of the books is also starkly contrasted. The memoir seems to be calling for one to live a carefree life spent chasing worldly pleasures. Zola’s novel, on the other hand, advocates for social change.
