What seems to be the main interest and ambition of the guests at the party Tom and Myrtle give in chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby?

The main interest and ambition of the guests at Tom and Myrtle's party seems to be maintaining the appearance of being in the know, acting like they're very fancy and smart.  Mr. McKee, the photographer, blithely refers to strategies he might employ to capture Myrtle in the most flattering possible pose, something about "bring[ing] out the modelling of the features" and "chang[ing] the light."  He clearly revels in being thought of as an artist, and he makes the most of his wife's suggestion that Myrtle would make a good subject, taking the opportunity to display his knowledge and artistic sensibility.

Further, Catherine, Myrtle's sister, tells a bold lie about Daisy, claiming that she's a Catholic and therefore doesn't believe in divorce, and Catherine states that this is the thing that is keeping Tom and Myrtle apart.  Despite the fact that she obviously has no idea what she's talking about, she speaks with assurance because she clearly wants to be perceived as knowledgeable.
