In Chapter 8, Max explains his typical summer before Kevin entered his life. He usually slept in as long as he liked, read comic books and watched TV all day. Kevin isn't about wasting a minute of life in the house, though. Once Kevin knows that Max can walk him around on his shoulders, quests are created each day. First, Max is awakened by Kevin each morning with loud banging on the bulkhead of his bed. "Get outta bed, you lazy beats!" says Kevin, "There are fair maidens to rescue! Dragons to slay!" (44). Then Kevin verbally annoys Max all through breakfast to get him out of the house more quickly. Finally, they go on quests. One of the first quests that the boys go on includes marching over the hospital where Kevin tells Max there is "The Experimental Bionics Unit" (51). He says they are creating a body for him, but not to tell his mother about it.
Then Kevin takes Max on a bigger quest in Chapters 10 and 11. First they meet at 3:00 a.m. to pull a wallet out of a storm drain. Next, they walk all the way to the Testaments to return the wallet to a criminally-looking couple named Loretta and Iggy. Max has never experienced so much life since he met Kevin! There are a few times that Max says that the summer actually turned out "cool," too. It would seem, then, that Kevin impacts Max's summer in a good way.
