Atticus had a brother and a sister. Traditionally, Finch men stayed at Finch's Landing. This was the family homestead, which was located along the Alabama River. Atticus left Finch's Landing to practice law in Maycomb. His brother left to go to medical school. He later became a doctor. Breaking tradition, Alexandra, his sister, stayed at Finch's Landing and "married a taciturn man who spent most of his time lying in a hammock by the river wondering if his trot-lines were full" (To Kill a Mockingbird, Chapter 1). Alexandra was a serious woman who valued tradition and propriety. His brother was John Hale Finch and he went by the nickname Jack. He was ten years younger than Atticus and settled in Nashville to practice medicine. He was warm and friendly. He often made his niece and nephew, Scout and Jem, laugh. He was a lifelong bachelor, but he always joked about marrying Miss Maudie.
