What is the decibel range of audible sound?

Most people are able to hear sound with a frequency between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz, called the range of audible sound. In a normal, healthy human ear, these sounds are clearly and correctly processed by the inner ear and the brain. Someone who has suffered hearing degradation due to genetics, old age, or exposure to loud sound may have a diminished range of audible sound.

The decibel range of audible sound is anything from 0 to 180 dB. Any sounds of more than 140 dB are painfully loud, and at the extreme of 180 dB, a person suffers irreversible hearing loss. Some loud sounds may temporarily diminish a person's ability to hear either due to minor injury to the eardrum or a processing issue where the brain has adjusted to very loud sounds and may not correctly interpret quiet sounds.
