How should parents and teachers prevent and deal with cyberbullying in the classroom?

According to experts, as many as 43% of children of certain ages are being bullied using technology in a process called cyberbullying, which means using technology to threaten or harass other people. To end this practice, teachers and parents have to understand the latest technology and how to use it.

In addition, parents and teachers need to communicate basic ground rules of behavior to children. The basic rule of thumb is that children should not use technology to say anything they wouldn't say to someone's face. Children have to be informed that they should tell parents or teachers immediately if they are being bullied. They should also be informed that they need to report abuse of other children to adults. Many schools have committees composed of teachers, administrators, and even students to convey the importance of stopping cyberbullying (and other forms of bullying) and to help students who are victimized. Computers and phones should be placed in public areas at home and in school, and cell phones should be put away during class.
