Gatsby returned for love. His intense desire to be reunited with Daisy drives his actions and behaviors, even from the first moment that Nick sees him "stretching out his arms toward the dark water," trembling as he reaches for the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. Jordan tells Nick that
"Gatsby bought [his] house so that Daisy would be just across the bay."
And Gatsby's nervousness surrounding the tea with Daisy betrays his terrible longing for her and his need to impress her so that he can win her back. He cannot even ask Nick himself; he has Jordan do it. Further, he sends someone over to cut Nick's grass, sends a ton of flowers, and fusses over the food. His awkwardness when Daisy does arrive and the way he "literally glowed" with "new well-being" confirms his continued love of her and the importance he places on her feelings for him.
