Does Friar Laurence rely more on logic or emotion in Romeo and Juliet?

While Friar Laurence is a loving and thoughtful character, he predominately makes decisions based on his understanding of logic and reason. He is a friend to Romeo and Juliet, but he is mainly an advisor. He thinks through his decisions in ways that Romeo and Juliet do not (or cannot, due to their age). Romeo and Juliet are propelled by their emotions, whereas Friar Laurence demonstrates the restraint that comes from making logical decisions.

The Friar tends to offer neutral advice. In some ways, he is like a school counselor to Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo and Juliet rush to the Friar and proclaim their love, the Friar reminds them of restraint. His language is often formal, and he routinely reminds the children that caution can be a value. Ultimately, the Friar agrees to marry the children because he believes it will be helpful, and he shows logic even in this impulsive decision.
