The Devil's Arithmetic has one clear protagonist, Hannah. Her journey and personal growth is the central focus of the book. She really evolves from beginning to end. When we think of a protagonist it is not only the main character of a story, but we often also think of someone that is likable (although that is not a requirement of the protagonist). At first Hannah seems to be lacking in much understanding or empathy for her grandparents and why they feel the need to remember the past so often and so openly. As she begins to experience what they did, however, she changes significantly and becomes a very sympathetic and admirable character.
The main antagonist of the story would have to be the Nazis. Although this is a group rather than an individual, there is no one Nazi that is the sole enemy. Rather, the Nazis as a whole are responsible for the suffering of Hannah, her family, and all of the other Jews.
