We are mostly dependent on fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas) for our energy requirements, whether it is for electricity or heat or for our automobiles. Fossil fuels have a number of issues, such as their limited supply and their environmental impacts. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form and hence cannot be regenerated in a reasonable time frame once used (and hence the name nonrenewable resources). Thus, there is a limited supply and we are running out fast. Their combustion results in the production of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which is responsible for global warming and climate change. For these two primary reasons, we need to find alternatives to conventional fuels. Some of the options currently being used and further developed include solar energy, wind energy, etc.
Hope this helps.
