Is balance of power a cause of war, condition of peace, or both?

I would say that balance of power is both a cause of war and a condition of peace.  A balance of power can bring about peace, but it can also cause war when a country or countries tries to break up the balance that currently exists.

Balance of power can certainly bring about peace.  There was balance of power in the “long 19th century” and peace in Europe because of it.  We can say that there was balance of power between the US and the USSR during the Cold War.  Between those two countries, at least, there was peace.  When there is a balance of power, countries know that they cannot gain by going to war.  They will not go to war because they are likely to lose without gaining anything.  In this way, balance of power can bring about peace.

However, balance of power can also cause war.  When there is a balance of power, there is always the possibility that some country will try to get stronger so as to break the balance.  When this happens, the other countries will typically go to war to try to prevent the first country from breaking the balance.  This, in a sense, is what happened in WWI.  There was a balance of power between European countries, Germany tried to increase its power to break that balance, and the other European countries fought to prevent this.

In these ways, balance of power can act both as a force for peace and a condition that can bring about war.

How do I write a strong thesis statement for my research paper? I am trying to prove that the events of the Holocaust influenced Shirley Jackson's...

Firstly, I think it's important to understand that the goal of a thesis is not to prove something; instead, a thesis states your argument for your readers and communicates the overall point of your essay or paper.

Secondly, you should consider that a thesis statement will convey the subject of your assignment, the attitude of your argument, and the direction in which you will lead the reader. In order to do this, you will need to develop your reasoning for why you are making the point you are making to your reader. In this case, how do you think the events of the Holocaust influenced Shirley Jackson's writing of The Lottery?

You will need to brainstorm a list of possible ways the Holocaust may have influenced her writing and consider how the events that took place during the time of the Holocaust may have appeared in the story itself. For example, you may talk about the lack of individuality (being treated as a number, rather than a person) that was evident in the story and how that parallels the Holocaust. You may also talk about the theme of cruelty by (seemingly) civilized people that characterized the story and also was very evident in the Holocaust.

Of course, these are just two examples of thematic elements you could use in your paper. It will be up to you to produce other ideas and make strong arguments for how your ideas relate to your thesis.

For your thesis statement, be sure to include your argument (that the events of the Holocaust influenced Shirley Jackson's writing of The Lottery) and all of your supporting points in one sentence.

Good luck!

A solution contains 185.0 g NaNO3 and has a volume of 750. mL. Find the molarity of the solution.

Molarity is a concentration unit that expresses concentration as moles of solute per liter of solution. A solution consists of two components, the solute and the solvent. The solute is what's dissolved, in this case sodium nitrate (NaNO3).

The amount of sodium nitrate was given in grams in this problem so we need to change it to moles by dividng by its molar mass:

185.0 g NaNO3 x (1 mole/84.99 g) = 2.177 moles NaNO3

Now we must convert the volume of the solution to liters:

750. ml x (1 liter/1000 ml) = 0.750 liters

We can now calculate the molarity:

(2.177 moles)/(0.750 liters) = 2.90 moles/liter = 2.90 M

Molarity is commonly used in chemistry calculations because of its relationship to moles. Since molarity = moles/liter, moles = molarity x liters. This makes it easy to find numbers of moles of substances that react in aqueous solutions.

Can you please explain Hosseini's use of setting and its prominence please?

Khaled Hosseini's second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, takes place in various locations throughout the Middle East, including Herat, a city in Afghanistan, Gul Daman, a village just outside of Herat, Kabul the capital of Afghanistan, and Murree, a city in Pakistan.

The settings are incredibly important to the story because the story follows two Muslim women--Mariam, who is forced into a conservative marriage and lifestyle, and Laila, who is much more liberal and less constrained by conservative values or expectations--and the two women are in constant conflict with their conservative surroundings, having to cover themselves, walk in pairs, and deal with men as the authority in their lives.

Had the novel been written in some place else--say, London?--then the conservative atmosphere would be lost and Mariam and Laila would have much different obstacles to endure. However, since the novel does take place throughout Afghanistan and Pakistan, the conservative values of those societies are then quite important as they shape the lives of the women and how they function in society.

Who is Jacob Sartorius?

Jacob Sartorius is a thirteen-year-old boy from the United States who has become very popular on the social media application Vine as well as the website Youtube. He creates video content of himself in humorous yet relatable situations or singing. He has released a single with the title "Sweatshirt." His videos have earned him recognition by magazines as well as professionals in the music industry. Because he is so young, his mother manages all of his social media accounts. His video and music content are very popular among young people, and Sartorius often uses his notoriety to speak out against bullying and the pressure young people may feel in relationships. In fact, his song, "Sweatshirt" is about offering a girl his sweatshirt to wear as a symbol of their relationship in place of any public displays of physical affection.

Jacob Sartorius and his media can be found on websites like Instagram, Youtube, and Vine by searching his name.

How do I write a sonnet about Romeo's perspective of love?

If you are writing a sonnet describing Romeo's perspective on love, it is important to begin by noting the structural limits of a sonnet.

A sonnet is composed of three quatrains (stanzas composed of 4 lines each), followed by a couplet (a stanza composed of 2 lines). This makes up a total of 14 lines in your poem.

A Shakespearian Sonnet also follows a specific rhyme scheme:

abab cdcd efef gg

The poem should be in iambic pentameter as well.

Now that you know how to write a sonnet, we will focus on what the sonnet should address. Romeo seems to have a passionate, but fickle perspective on love. For example, he believes himself to be in love with Rosaline at the beginning of the play, but once he sees Juliet he immediately forgets about Rosaline! That's a pretty big change-of-mind.

Romeo also believes his life to be incomplete without Juliet, so for him, love is the only reason for him to live. Once he hears that Juliet is "dead," he goes to get a poison strong enough to kill himself.

If I were writing this sonnet, I would write the first quatrain (4 lines) about his love for Rosaline. The next quatrain would be about him seeing Juliet for the first time, and forgetting about Rosaline. The third quatrain would be about his love for Juliet and how he does not want to live without her. For the couplet, or ending of the poem, it would be wise to summarize what you have said so far by characterizing Romeo as passionate and quick to change his mind.

Hope this helps!

Why does Ralph feel "fright and apprehension and pride" after hitting the pig?

In Chapter 7, Jack leads the group of boys on a hunting expedition and Ralph comes face-to-face with a charging boar. This is Ralph's first hunting experience, and he is excited at the opportunity to kill a pig. From a distance of five yards, Ralph throws his spear and successfully hits the boar on the snout. The spear glances off its nose, however, and the boar continues to run through the forest. After hitting the boar, Golding writes that Ralph was full of "fright and apprehension and pride" (162). Hunting is a dangerous activity, and Ralph is sure to feel some sort of fear when facing a wild boar that is charging at him. Ralph is apprehensive about killing the pig because he realizes it is a bloody affair. Ralph is also nervous about killing an animal for the first time. At the same time, he is proud of the fact that he struck the boar on his first attempt.
